Hey everyone,
Quick gut check: what site have you had open in a tab for basically your entire CS degree? If you've touched machine learning at all, it's probably Hugging Face. The place you grab every pretrained model, every dataset, every checkpoint for a class project at 2am.
Nvidia reportedly just agreed to buy it. For $12.9 billion. If it closes, that's the biggest acquisition Nvidia has ever made, bigger than any chip deal they've ever done.
This week we're breaking down what that actually means for the tools you use every day, and why it's got people nervous.
What we're reading
Netflix quietly shut down two of its game studios, including Night School Studio, the team behind Oxenfree.
LinkedIn is cutting R&D jobs in Tel Aviv. Yes, the site you use to find a job is also cutting jobs.
TikTok cut 75 more Seattle jobs this week, this round explicitly naming software engineers and data scientists, not just moderators.
Nvidia Might Own the Site Your Whole ML Career Runs On

The platform every ML side project runs on might become Nvidia's biggest acquisition ever.
Side note before we get into the deal. If a story like this makes you want to build your own thing instead of depending on someone else's infrastructure, there's a less glamorous dependency waiting on the other side. Once people actually pay you, billing becomes its own job. Chasing invoices, patching together Stripe workarounds, watching cash sit uncollected while you'd rather be shipping. Tabs automates subscription and usage-based billing so that particular fire doesn't become the thing you're fighting instead of building. Worth bookmarking for whenever you're the one sending the invoice.
How Much Is Your Billing Lag Actually Costing You?
Most SaaS finance teams know their billing process isn't perfect. Few know what it's actually costing them.
Answer 5 quick questions — contracts signed per month, ACV, days to first invoice, error rate, DSO — and the Tabs Billing Lag Calculator gives you a dollar figure benchmarked against top SaaS companies.
It takes two minutes. The number might surprise you.

The Information broke it late on August 26, matched fast by CNBC, TechCrunch, Fortune, and Forbes: Nvidia has agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Nothing's signed yet, and multiple outlets say talks could still fall apart, so treat the number as a strong multi-sourced report, not a done deal.
Here's what makes it wild. Hugging Face's last known valuation was $4.5 billion, from a 2023 round. Nvidia actually offered $500 million last year for a stake that would've valued the company at $7 billion, and Hugging Face turned it down. Reportedly because it didn't want one investor controlling platform decisions. The new number is nearly 3x that rejected offer, on a company pulling in roughly $150 million a year in revenue. That's close to 86 times revenue for a hub used by more than 13 million developers.
What most CS students assume: the open-source tools everyone builds on stay neutral forever, just some scrappy platform the whole community loves and nobody owns.
What's actually happening: the neutral infrastructure everyone depends on is exactly what gets bought first, because whoever owns the chokepoint between developers and models controls the whole stack. This isn't a one-off either. Stripe just paid over $7 billion for OpenRouter, a much smaller model-routing service that was valued at $1.3 billion months earlier.
Your move: don't build your entire skillset around one platform staying free, neutral, and unowned. Know your way around Hugging Face, sure, but also understand the alternatives (Ollama, raw PyTorch, other model hubs). In interviews, being able to talk about vendor lock-in and portability, not just knowing how to call an API, is exactly the kind of systems thinking that separates a strong candidate from someone who's only ever used one tool.
Small bonus wtf: this is the same Hugging Face that had one of its own models hacked by a rogue OpenAI system back in July. The model reportedly broke out of its sandbox and exploited a vulnerability to get in. It's been a chaotic year to be Hugging Face, acquisition rumors included.
That's the issue. If you're mid-way through a side project built entirely on Hugging Face, this is a good week to at least skim what changes if Nvidia owns it.
Talk it out with people who get it. Drop your take in r/joblessCSMajors: does this change how you'd bet on open-source AI tooling?
