./j  JOBLESS WEEKLY · October 23, 2026

Hey everyone,

Netflix made $3.4 billion in profit last quarter, up 9% from a year ago. Then on Wednesday, Oct. 14, it told about 1,000 people they were out.

That's roughly 6% of the company, per AP, and the cuts hit product, tech, legal and HR the hardest. So if you're a CS student, the layoff headline is about your future teammates.

This week: why a healthy company still cuts, what it means for your applications, and one move you can make this week.

// THE SHORT VERSION

  • What happened: Netflix's co-CEOs told staff on Oct. 14 that about 1,000 jobs (6% of ~16,000) are going, mostly in product, tech, legal and HR.

  • Why you care: this is a profitable company trimming teams, not a company in trouble. Cuts like this can tighten junior hiring even when the business is fine.

  • What to do: aim at teams that make money directly, and show you can ship something a business would pay for.

SOC 2 Ready in 14 days. Three sessions from you.

Enterprise buyers will not put your product near their customer data without a SOC 2 report. Sprinto gets you audit ready in 14 days, across three working sessions. AI agents do the collecting, you approve. Your auditor signs off.

Here's the setup, per AP. Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters emailed staff on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Netflix had about 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025, so 6% is nearly 1,000 people. The memo said “decisions like these are never easy,” and that Netflix must be “disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources.”

Why cut when the numbers look good?

  1. Growth is slowing. Per Variety, engagement per user slowed in the first half of 2026, and Q2 operating margin slipped to 33.4% from 34.1%.

  2. Wall Street wants more. Netflix's Q3 revenue guidance came in below analyst expectations, per both AP and Variety.

  3. Support teams get squeezed first. Product, tech, legal and HR took most of the cuts. Those are the teams that support revenue, not the ones directly shipping what subscribers pay for.

This is the 2022 playbook with a different mood. Back then roughly 450 people were cut after Netflix lost subscribers, per Variety. Now the company is growing, and it's cutting anyway. That's the pattern to notice: layoffs are no longer a signal that a company is failing. They're a budgeting tool.

Earnings calls are the next place to listen for talk about headcount.

✕ WHAT MOST CS STUDENTS DO

“Netflix just laid off 6%, so Netflix is dead to my search.”

✓ WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS

A profitable company that just trimmed 6% still has ~15,000 people and a Q3 plan. Teams that make money directly are the ones most likely to keep hiring.

❝

Decisions like these are never easy, and we don't take them lightly.

Three things you can steal

1

Healthy company ≠ safe team.

Netflix's profit rose 9% and 1,000 jobs still went. Ask in interviews how the team ties to revenue.

2

Read the earnings calls.

Companies telegraph hiring plans on earnings calls. Listening for words like “prioritize” tells you where headcount is headed.

3

Product and tech were hit.

Don't assume engineering is shielded. Pick up skills that show up in a business metric, like latency, cost or conversion.

Quick answers

How many people did Netflix lay off in October 2026?

About 1,000, roughly 6% of its ~16,000 full-time employees, announced Oct. 14, 2026, mostly in product, technology, legal and HR, per AP.

Why did Netflix lay off workers while profitable?

Per Variety, engagement per user slowed in H1 2026 and Q3 guidance fell below Wall Street's expectations, even though Q2 profit was $3.4 billion.

// YOUR MOVE · THIS WEEK, ~1 HOUR

Make a one-page earnings cheat sheet.

  1. Pick a company you'd love to intern at and find its last earnings summary.

  2. Write down three numbers: revenue growth, margin, and any headcount comment.

  3. In two sentences, say which of its teams make that money. Tuck it into your interview notes.

Then hit reply and tell me the company you picked.
